How to Prepare for Your Summer Equine Photoshoot

Tips from a Midwest Equine Photographer Who’s Seen It All – Bugs, Sweat, and Golden Hour Glow

Summer is one of the most magical times of year for equine photography. Long evenings, golden hour light, and horses gleaming in their sleek summer coats, it’s honestly hard to beat. As dreamy as summer sessions can be, there are a few key things you’ll want to prep in advance to make sure you and your horse are camera-ready (and comfortable!).

Plan for the Light

Summer means early mornings and late evenings are your best friend. The midday sun can be harsh (and hot), so I always aim to shoot during golden hour, typically within 1-2 hours after sunrise or before sunset. Not only is the light softer and more flattering, but it gives your photos that magical, glowing feel. If you’re not a morning person, opt for an evening session.

Keep the Bugs at Bay

Flies and mosquitoes can make your horse cranky and fidgety during your session (and leave you swatting mid-shot). A few quick tips to help manage them:

  • Bring fly spray for both you and your horse
  • Apply fly spray about 15 minutes before the start of the session so it has time to settle. Having it easily on hand while moving about is also great to help reduce the amount of flies and mosquitos as the session progresses.
  • For you, think about wearing light, breathable clothing. Ultimately, I want you to be the most comfortable you can be!

Groom for That Summer Glow

Shiny coats photograph beautifully in the sun, so a little bit of prep goes a long way. If you decide to bathe your horse, bathe the night before and keep your horse inside if possible. Give your horse a thorough grooming before the session and spot clean as needed. If you’re getting your horse show-ready, clip any stray hairs or add any oil for extra shine.

Read Your Horse’s Energy

Hot weather can sometimes mean shorter tempers or lower patience for standing still, and that’s okay!

We’ll go with the flow of how your horse is feeling. With years of experience with horses AND photographing them, I understand when a horse may need a break or a change of scenery. We can focus on more candid, movement-based shots if needed. Some of the best photos come from just letting your horse be a horse.

Don’t Stress Perfection

Summer sessions are about connection, warmth, and capturing the legacy you share with your horse. A swishy tail, a playful moment, a nuzzle during a snack break – those little things are what make your photos real and full of feeling.

Summer doesn’t last forever, but the memories you make with your horse can. Let’s capture the long days, golden light, and sweet moments while they’re here. 💛
