What if my horse misbehaves during my photoshoot?

It’s totally normal to wonder how your horse will behave during a photoshoot. Horses are unpredictable, and somehow, it’s like they just *know* when you want them to look and behave their best… and they do the opposite.

I’ve had my fair share of horses who had other opinions during our photoshoots. From being annoyed with bugs, getting distracted by the delicious grass in front of them (or losing their attention within minutes of the session starting), there’s not much I haven’t handled.

How I handle it as your photographer

Patience
I was once told I had the patience of an angel, and I always say I got it from my mom. I’m patient and understanding, knowing that sometimes we just need a little bit of extra time.

Flexible Shot Lists
Although I come into the session with ideas in mind (and any must-have shots you’ve requested), I stay flexible. We’ll work within your horse’s energy and the environment to allow for fun, fluid, and safe photos.
(Bonus: this also means a ton of truly candid moments! Sometimes these are even better than the “poses” I help guide you towards)

Understanding Your Horse’s Energy
Every horse is different. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to sit and watch the horses in my gelding’s pasture to see how each reacts to the world around them. Some barely notice a turkey in the distance; others are on high alert. That kind of observation helps me read your horse’s body language during our photoshoot so I can adapt, using both your energy and theirs together to create magic.

How you can help

  • Stay Relaxed. If you’re calm, your horse will be too.
  • Take a short walk or snack break if your horse seems antsy. (It helps you both!)
  • Bring extra treats if your horse loves them. They can be the perfect reward and motivation.
  • Most importantly: HAVE FUN!

I’m speaking from experience: during my very first photoshoot with my gelding, Orion, I was a mix of anxious and excited. Our relationship was still new, and I wasn’t sure how he’d react. My dear friend and photographer Shelley Paulson (an expert with horses) captured it all beautifully. Even though Orion’s attention span was short and his frustrations were starting to show – and mine too, honestly – when I received the photos, I fell in love with the moments she captured.

If you’re worried about your horse’s behavior, trust me – we’ll make magic happen no matter what!
